Brandon housing project draws cost concerns

The potential cost of a 29-unit housing project was an issue for some on Monday night.

Dan Caputo, director of real estate development at Cornerstone Housing Partners, told the select board that his organization plans to purchase 333 Jones Drive after it is renovated and run it as a housing complex.

Cornerstone Housing Partners is a nonprofit that develops affordable housing projects. It formed last year when the Housing Trust of Rutland County merged with NeighborWorks of Western Vermont and Shires Housing, the latter a Bennington County-based affordable housing organization.

Brandon resident Brent Buehler took issue with the potential cost of the building. Caputo said he didn’t have the total project cost available for that evening.

“This is not affordable, this is not realistic, and if this is what you’re bringing to 333 Jones Drive, then I’m sorry but I object,” said Buehler.

Brandon Relay for Life Receives National Recognition

“We’re just blown away by it. I mean, here we are, this little town of Brandon. It’s unbelievable. I couldn’t believe it, out of all of the relays in the U.S., we won,” said Neshobe team Capt. Helen Williams.

The Relay for Life of Rutland County is one of the largest groups in New England, with over 50 registered teams, aiming to collectively raise $200,000 before this year’s relay in June.

Pate said she wants people to know that they, too, can put together a team, raise what they can and celebrate those who have been affected by cancer.

For many married couples, when one partner is diagnosed, there’s often no question that the other will become the caregiver. It’s the hard part of the "for better or for worse" wedding vow, and something renowned Vermont artist Warren Kimble has been navigating over the last decade with his wife of 50 years, Lorraine.

“I just made a Valentine for Lorraine,” Kimble explained. "One year, I forgot to buy a Valentine, so I went down to the cellar and cut one out of wood, and so far I've made one every year for her."
